NEWCASTLE KZN: Osizweni drug bust nets nine suspects

The suspects are expected to appear in the Madadeni Magistrates Court soon.

Drugs with a street value of approximately R1 800, and suspected stolen goods valued at around R15 000, have been seized as evidence by police officials from the Osizweni area.

These are the results of an intelligence driven joint operation on September 10 and 12.

Nine suspects, aged from 19 to 43 years old, are expected in the Madadeni Magistrates Court soon on charges including the possession of narcotics and the possession of stolen goods.

Lizzy Arumugam from the Newcastle SAPS Corporate Communications office, elaborated.

“With the assistance of Osizweni Crime Prevention members, Newcastle Task Team members, and Newcastle  Public Order Policing members, [the joint operation] was conducted in the Osizweni policing area, focusing on drugs and other cases.”

Members patrolled Section A near the Top Rank, where the first arrest was made – the suspect was found in possession of Mandrax tablets and heroin.

During later patrols in Blaauwbosch, near Mzamo High School, two more suspects were arrested for violating the Disaster Management Act – they were out and about during hours deemed after curfew in terms of the national Covid-19 lockdown. Another suspect was arrested for the same contravention in the Manzana area.

The joint operation was kicked into a higher gear when members followed leads to a house at Zulu Stand, Blaauwbosch, where a suspect was found in the possession of 24 parcels of heroin. The patrol then returned to the Manzana area.

“While conducting their patrol, members spotted four suspects transporting suspected stolen goods. The suspects were stopped and searched.”

In their possession, SAPS officials found the following:
• A black television set
• A distribution board box with 10 circuit breakers
• A stereo system (Telefunken brand – silver and blue)
• A microscope
• A door handle (Economy brand)
• A wall plug
• An electric grinder (black and silver)
• Two rolls of electric wiring
• A cutter
• A grass trimmer (silver and brown)
• Eight screwdrivers
• A jigsaw (blue and silver)
• A pair of protective gloves (black).

“The overall estimated street value of the Mandrax tablets and heroin was R1 800, and the estimated value of all the goods suspected of being stolen was R15 000. The suspects will all appear in the Madadeni Magistrates Court soon,” concluded Arumugam, who described the operation as another success.
