ESTCOURT KZN: Two arrested after negotiating lobola

The men were arrested, charged with possession of firearms and ammunition

Shortly after negotiating lobola arrangements in the Manqomfini area of Weenen, Zazele Zwane (53) and Mbongiseni Mdluli (52) were arrested.

Members of Pietermaritzburg Public Order Police (POP) received a tip-off that both men, who are from Ezakheni, were carrying unlicensed firearms.

The team headed out to the area on October 10 at about 15:00 and waited for the pair.

“As the men were returning to their homesteads, police pounced. The suspects’ vehicle was intercepted and they were found to be in possession of two pistols with 23 rounds of ammunition,” explained police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele.

The men were arrested, charged with possession of firearms and ammunition, and appeared in the Weenen Magistrate’s Court last week.

They were remanded into custody until October 22 for a formal bail application.

During the operation, police also found an abandoned AK-47 with 11 rounds of ammunition in Weenen.

Colonel Mbele said that this firearm will be sent for ballistic testing to ascertain if it was used in any crime in the country.
