NEWCASTLE KZN: National Minister officially opens skills development centre in Blaauwbosch

Nonhlanhla Khoza, the KZN MEC for Social Development, said the centre provided youth the opportunity to build their own jobs.

Lindiwe Zulu, the National Minister of Social Development and Nonhlanhla Khoza, the MEC for Social Development in KwaZulu-Natal,  were among high-ranking officials at the opening of the Blaauwbosch Youth Skills Development Centre recently.

The purpose of the centre, according to a statement from the Newcastle Municipality, is to equip young people from the Amajuba District with the fundamental skills required for self-sufficiency.

Municipal spokesperson, Mlungisi Khumalo explained a graduation ceremony was held on the day of the opening, for youths who completed the training programmes. These training courses were held in partnership with the Services SETA (Sector Education Training Authority).

“Business administration, catering, cleaning, and hygiene were among the skills taught to the students,” said Khumalo.

Minister Zulu, in her keynote address, urged residents to look after the facility because it was bringing progress to the Amajuba District. During her speech, MEC Khoza emphasised the establishment was providing youth with the opportunity to build their own careers.

Catering equipment was also handed over to a young women’s co-operative as a starter kit for them to establish their own business.

The programme has been lauded as a milestone by the Mayor of Newcastle, Dr Ntuthuko Mahlaba, who believes the facility will stem the tide of problems facing the youth of today.

“Newcastle Municipality sees this project as a major milestone for Newcastle’s youth, particularly in Blaauwbosch. We have always been committed to empowering youngsters with fervour and commitment. We’ve also advocated for the youth to prioritise education and skill development.”
