A ‘not so downhill’ cycle ride from Dullstroom to Cullinan
Cyclists still had 2 600 metres of climbing to do on very difficult, wet and eroded district roads
After months and months of training, it was time at last for the notorious Cullinan tot Tonteldoos 260km race last weekend.
In the past years, the race has started in Cullinan and ended in a small place called Tonteldoos in Mpumalanga, close to Dullstroom.
This year, the event started in Dullstroom and ended in Cullinan and was officially called a ‘down event’, but the route felt anything but ‘down’.
Cyclists still had 2 600 metres of climbing to do on very difficult, wet and eroded district roads.
The weather extremes, like in the past, were also a huge challenge again this year, with temperatures ranging from eight degrees in the morning to 36 degrees at midday.
To end it all, cyclists had to ride the last 40km in the rain.
Despite all these difficult conditions however, the Vryheid cyclists really enjoyed the event and the camaraderie among their fellow athletes.
Sandra Haywood took a well-deserved first place in the women’s event and Andrea de Beer ended a well-deserved third.
“Well done to all the athletes for keeping Vryheid’s flag flying exceptionally high this weekend.”
Congratulations also to Jabulani Xulu, who had an excellent race, Thabani Xaba, Hannes van Staden, Ernest Franzen, Evy Haywood, Martin Schoeman, Vlam de Beer and Riaan Swanepoel, who also tackled the event in excellent style.
