The Methodist Church Sunday School in Vryheid commemorated Freedom Day in honour of the auspicious moment in 1994 when the first non-racial election was held in South Africa.
The service was opened by Pastor B Cele, who read an inspirational passage from the Scriptures. John 8: 36: “If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed. Sin enslaves us and true freedom is found only in Christ. Sin deceives by promising freedom, yet all it does is control and corrupt the person. Christ is the only source of spiritual truth and will truly free us.” Pastor Cele prayed for all children to be free in Christ and safe from the temptation of sin.
History teacher Mr TB Metabo, who was an invited guest, elaborated on why we celebrate Freedom Day in South Africa. “Freedom Day marks the liberation of our country from colonialism. Although we are still partially trapped in colonial and racial entanglement, there are many achievements in South Africa in the past 28 years of freedom, such as improvements in education, housing subsidies and social grants. What is bad is that South Africa is measured by the ability to vote for leaders who care for themselves. Things like corruption, looting and floods have dented all the improvements.“
He expressed sincere and heartfelt condolences to the families who have lost loved ones as a result of the recent floods. Children performed aerobics displays as part of the day’s entertainment and refreshments were handed out. Dr TP Nkosi extended a vote of thanks to all the speakers.
