Vryheid on the back foot against Piet Retief
Piet Piet Retief managed to score four tries compared to Vryheid’s one try

Vryheid’s rugby team met Piet Retief in a ‘teeth-grinding encounter’ on Saturday. The local boys have a recurring issue with discipline when they step onto the field. In this instance, those issues cost them the game against their neighbouring town. Even though Vryheid didn’t receive any yellow cards for dangerous play, their game plan seemed to be non-existent. Vryheid did excel in the line-outs, but Piet Retief’s scrums simply overpowered them. Piet Retief managed to score four tries compared to Vryheid’s one try. The final score was 5-22. The weather had an influence on the game, but the opposition also had to play in the same conditions and were the better team on the day. According to their coach, this defeat will serve as motivation for the local team to improve their game and discipline. ‘Man of the Match’ awards went to: Ruben Laatz (forwards) and Armand Holtzhauzen (back-line). Both these players made excellent tackles and played their hearts out.
