Community sells cupcakes to help Sam

Elize and a team of volunteers manned a stall in dreary weather conditions to raise funds for Sam’s bills.

Samantha Hayes is no stranger to Vryheid locals, with her bubbly personality and determination as she fights her own uphill battle.

Sam, as she is known by most people, had to undergo another leg amputation after doctors discovered bacteria in the wound from a previous operation. Sam had been admitted to Entabeni Hospital in Durban, where her doctor found that pseudomonas (a type of bacteria) had spread through her leg and decided that the leg had to be amputated in sections. This would again see her go through daily acid washes; an excruciatingly painful procedure to clean the wound. In the meantime, medical bills are piling up… To help, Cindy Mossop is selling orange ribbons and ‘guardian angel’ Elize Tschirpig organised a cupcake sale.

On Saturday, Elize and a team of volunteers manned a stall in dreary weather conditions to raise funds for Sam’s bills. KwaZulu Private Ambulance Services area manager Frikkie Bekker and his crew, together with staff from the private hospital, also supported the day by offering people free health checks. Riana Slump and daughter Maya contributed by painting the faces of young and old alike.

Upbeat music set the tone for a successful fund-raiser, with Michael Phytides and friends riding in to show their support as well. Michael also donated funds towards the cause. Anyone who would still like to make a donation can use the following banking details: Z Schoeman, Capitec Bank, Account Number 1474892947, Reference: Sam. It is said that Vryheiders know how to stand together in a time of need, and Saturday was further evidence of this.
