Foundation celebrates Mandela Day

Vegetables were planted at the Hlobane Thuthukani Pre-School Centre by the Zakhele Foundation and volunteers on Mandela Day to mark 67 minutes of community service.
Community members, Zakhele Xulu, Siboniso Nsusha, Andile Khumalo, Bazo Mzolo, Xolani Mngomezulu, Phumlani Mbuyisa and Londiwe Nxusa, were among those who visited the school, under the leadership of Sanna Simelane who is better known as Nkosazane.
The initiative saw 30 spinach plants, 24 cabbages and 15 onions being planted.
One of the aims of the project is to teach the pre-school children to take responsibility for the plants and to learn about the importance of gardening.
The Hlobane Thuthukani Pre-School was officially opened by Hlobane Colliery personnel manager, NR Goodies.
Zakhele Xulu of the Zakhele Foundation said that the centre has assisted many children in Hlobane. Over 80% of the children, who enrolled, graduated under the leadership of Sanna Simelane.
“This will also teach the pre-schoolers about cause and effect – for example, plants die without water, weeds compete with plants,” Xulu said. “They will also learn from where fresh food comes from. It also gives the children a chance to learn about the outdoor environment in a safe and pleasant place.”
He added that this will be a continuous programme to be held on yearly basis and one that will be monitored closely by community members.
Sanna Simelane said she appreciated the initiative as it would assist her and the children.
The next project is to assist a pre-school with re-painting and the acquisition of new toys for the children.
