Municipality plants over 20 indigenous trees for Arbour Week
Over 20 Indigenous trees were planted at various locations when the Newcastle Municipality marked National Arbor Day.
Mthandeni Myende, the municipal spokesperson, said the initiative was led by Council Speaker, Cllr Thengi Zulu, alongside Portfolio Chairperson for Community Services, Cllr Hlatshwayo.
“The event aimed to raise awareness about the importance of tree conservation and environmental protection.
“The planted trees, including the award-winning Searsia lancea, which is symbolic of peace, unity, and the community’s commitment to ending senseless killings and gangsterism,” he said.
Newcastle Mayor, Xolani Dube, emphasised that trees play a crucial role in sustainable development, while Cllr Hlatshwayo encouraged educators to promote environmental care among learners.
“This initiative aligns with Arbor Week and the arrival of Spring, serving as a lasting monument to peace and unity in Newcastle,” concluded Myende.
