KZN Premier ‘determined to combat criminals terrorizing Ward 11’

Rampant crime that has seen gangs terrorise communities in Madadeni and other areas of the Amajuba district was under the spotlight when KZN Premier, Thamsanqa Ntuli, led a crime-fighting imbizo at Osizweni Community Hall in Ward 11.

The Newcastle Municipality’s Communications Department described the meeting as an effort to intensify the war against crime in the area.

The Premier, collaborating with the Justice Crime Prevention and Security (JCPS) cluster, has resolved to ‘heighten the government’s crime prevention and combating interventions to ease the plight of these communities (in Amajuba).

Premier Ntuli also led a critical briefing session in the Osizweni Hall, ahead of the Crime Imbizo at the Osizweni Stadium.

The briefing session brought together key stakeholders, including the South African Police Service (SAPS), Community Safety, and local government officials.

The session aimed to strategize on combating crime and ensuring safer communities.

The Municipality’s Communications Department referred to Newcastle Mayor Cllr. Xolani Dube leading similar interventions in a bid to combat rising crime.

Some of these interventions included:

  • Taxi violence intervention: A cooperation agreement was signed with five taxi associations to resolve taxi violence.
  • Community engagement: Mayor Dube has been engaging with the community to raise awareness about the dangers of gangsterism and crime.
  • Collaboration with law enforcement: The mayor has been working closely with SAPS to ensure that perpetrators of crime are apprehended.
