Hawks bust Newcastle dagga lab, two arrested

In a decisive blow to illegal drug operations, the Hawks made two arrests and dismantled an alleged dagga laboratory in Newcastle this past week.

The suspects now face charges of drug dealing after authorities uncovered a sophisticated operation producing and selling dagga-based products.

The arrests followed an intelligence-driven operation led by the Newcastle Serious Organised Crime Investigation Unit (Hawks) in collaboration with the Newcastle K9 Unit, Crime Intelligence, and Public Order Policing.

Hawks spokesperson, Warrant Officer Sibu Ncane, said the lab was processing dagga, blending it with other substances, and creating consumable items.

“A search warrant was obtained from the Newcastle Magistrate’s Court, and during the raid, we confirmed the premises were being used as a dagga laboratory,” Ncane said.

Evidence seized included edibles, loose dagga, oils, bottled dagga, cigars, and dagga plants. Equipment such as weigh scales, pressers, UV lights, and cooking pots were also confiscated, along with an undisclosed amount of cash.

The total value of the items is estimated at R120,000.

Both suspects appeared before the Newcastle Magistrate’s Court on Monday, January 20.

KwaZulu-Natal Hawks Provincial Head, Major General Lesetja Senona, commended the team for their dedication and efficiency. “This operation demonstrates our commitment to combating organised crime and ensuring that those involved are held accountable,” said Senona.

The arrests mark another step in the fight against drug-related crimes in the region. Authorities have vowed to intensify their efforts to curb the illegal drug trade.
