Newcastle SPCA and local fire-fighters team up to save stranded dog

Within minutes, fire-fighters had out their extended ladders to allow rescuers to descend safely into the reservoir.

A routine Sunday morning took a dramatic turn when the Newcastle SPCA received an urgent call about a dog trapped at the bottom of an old water reservoir.

The rescue operation put the dedication and resourcefulness of everyone involved to the test but ended in a heart-warming success.

Newcastle SPCA Inspector, Jenavieve Tinkler, who was at the scene, described the situation as both challenging and urgent.

“When we arrived, it was clear that our ladders were too short to reach the bottom of the tank,” said Tinkler. “But we refused to give up and immediately called for assistance from the Newcastle Fire Department. Their rapid response made all the difference.”

Within minutes, fire-fighters had out their extended ladders to allow rescuers to descend safely into the reservoir.

Once inside, Tinkler and Mr. Viviers from the fire department carefully approached the frightened dog.

“The poor dog was terrified and had no way of getting out on its own. A member of the public had tried to contain it, but in its panic, the dog bolted. I advised him to step back to prevent further distress,” Tinkler explained.

Using calm voices and a gentle approach, the rescuers managed to gain the animal’s trust.

“As soon as I touched the dog and muzzled it for safety, it relaxed. The moment I picked it up, it clung to me, wrapping its front paws tightly around my arm—it was as if the dog knew it was finally safe,” she recalled.

The dog was carefully brought to the surface, where it was examined for injuries and found to have only a minor graze.

It is now in the care of the Newcastle SPCA, awaiting either reunion with its rightful owner or the chance for a new loving home.

“This rescue was a true testament to teamwork and compassion. We are incredibly grateful to the Newcastle Fire Department for their invaluable assistance. When we come together for a common cause, we can accomplish extraordinary things,” Tinkler said.

The Newcastle SPCA relies on donations to continue its life-saving work.
