Students lead the way in large-scale Newcastle clean-up

The Newcastle High School (NHS) Environmental Club, led by club coordinator, Nduduzo Hlatshwayo, took action to keep the town clean and green with a large-scale clean-up event that recently took place.

The initiative, which aimed to raise awareness about environmental responsibility, saw learners actively picking up litter in various areas across Newcastle.

NHS staff, who are members of the club, also came out to support the green initiative which proved to be a success.

The clean-up commenced at 8am and continued until 11am. During this time, the club visited three key locations: Hospital Street, Allen Street, and the area near BMW.

Traffic officers were on-site to ensure the safety of the students by managing traffic flow and providing protection as they worked along the streets.

The club had been actively involved in environmental efforts, and this event formed part of their ongoing commitment to community service and ecological preservation.

By organising this clean-up, NHS aimed to inspire other community members to take pride in their surroundings and contribute to a cleaner environment.

“We believe that small actions could make a big difference. Through this clean-up, we hope to encourage responsible waste disposal and environmental awareness,” said Hlatshwayo.

Community members who wished to support the initiative were encouraged to join or show their support in any way possible.

The NHS Environmental Club looks forward to making a positive impact and setting an example for the town’s residents.
