Residents have shared how they are not satisfied with the service they receive from the Department of Home Affairs, as it is either closed or there is no network. The department’s offices have been closed from time to time; it is alleged that they have not had electricity for the past three years and have been using a generator.
An employee of Home Affairs allegedly revealed to EFF members that since 2022 they have been using a generator to serve people. The employee allegedly went on to explain that they are currently using a second generator, as the first one was damaged.
EFF member Mlungisi Buthelezi said that, “A source of ours told us that the Home Affairs offices are not operating because there is no electricity. We then took it upon ourselves to visit their offices last week Wednesday and when we got there, indeed the offices were closed but the workers were inside in the dark. We made means to talk to the manager, but we ended up speaking to one of the employees who spoke on behalf of the manager. Even though he said he could not share much, he revealed that it has been three years since they have not had electricity in the building and have been using a generator.”
After the EFF visit, the offices were operating as usual on Friday, with electricity. Buthelezi added that, “It’s a miracle that the electricity has been restored so quickly. This makes us question ourselves even more; was there even a problem or was someone playing games?”
The EFF has released a statement demanding answers as to what has been going on with the electricity for the past three years. The statement reads: “The prolonged power outage at the Department of Home Affairs Vryheid Satellite Office has raised serious concerns. The office has been without power for over three years, severely impacting service delivery. We call for a thorough investigation into the use of the generator during this period. It is imperative to determine who benefited from the generator’s use and why it was not utilised to maintain essential services. We urge the relevant authorities to take immediate action to restore power to the office, conduct a comprehensive investigation into the generator’s use, and ensure accountability for any mismanagement or irregularities. The public’s trust in government institutions relies on transparency and efficient service delivery.”
