Rapist sentenced to life after Mondlo woman’s bravery
Nquthu court sentenced a Mondlo rapist to life imprisonment, reinforcing justice against gender-based violence.

The Nquthu Regional Court sentenced a 29-year-old man to life imprisonment for the rape of a woman in Mondlo.
The heinous crime was committed in September 2023. The complainant was walking home after spending time with friends when the accused, whom she recognised from the area, offered to accompany her. Along the way, he accused her of stealing his cellphone. When she denied the accusation, he assaulted her and raped her twice.
Before he could rape her again, the woman tricked him by suggesting that they go to her house. When they arrived, she alerted her sister inside. The accused fled when he realised they were not alone.
The complainant sought medical help at a nearby hospital, where the case was reported to the police. She only knew the attacker by sight, but after making enquiries, she obtained his details and provided them to investigators.
The rapist was later traced to Durban. Unaware that he was facing a rape charge, the man agreed to meet with police on his return. When he got to the police station, the woman immediately identified him as her attacker.
In court, Prosecutor Bonginkosi Don Motha led the evidence of the complainant, the investigating officer and the doctor who examined the victim. The woman told the court that the incident had left her traumatised both physically and emotionally.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) welcomed the outcome, noting that the fight against gender-based violence remains one of its top priorities.
