10-year-old Mylee-Grace celebrates her curls in debut book

Mylee-Grace Merkle’s debut book encourages young girls to embrace their natural beauty and confidence.

10-year-old local lass Mylee-Grace Merkle recently released a book entitled ‘Smiley and the magic of her curls’. This youngster is a first-time author and decided to write the book because of her hair.

Merkle explains that, “I have always had people wanting my hair to look a particular way, either tied up or pushed to the back. I want my hair to look the way it looks; let it loose with my curls. I decided to write because people should look and feel the way they want to; it’s about understanding and being comfortable with how you look.”

Merkle, who goes to Michaelis Primary School, used her friend and cousin as characters in her book. She said it was a bit challenging to get the sentences to flow, but she did it with the support of her parents, family and friends. “People have shown great support of this book and for this we are grateful. We hope it heals young girls and breaks stereotypes on how they should look.”
“We also thank Monique Mortimer for the wonderful illustration she did for the book,” said the author’s mother, Kayla Merkle.
