Green School award for Nkwambazi Primary at EDTEA summit
Nkwambazi Primary School received top honours for its outstanding environmental education and sustainability efforts.
Key stakeholders attended an event hosted by KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Economic Development, Tourism & Environmental Affairs (EDTEA) Musa Zondi in Durban recently. The stakeholders included the Department of Water & Sanitation, uMngeni-uThukela Water, Department of Education, and KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board.
Among the special guests was Nkwambazi Primary School principal Zakhele Xulu, who was invited in recognition of the school’s active participation in the School Environmental Education Programme (SEEP). Xulu has been involved in SEEP since 2021, when he began serving as a co-ordinator while working at KwaNotshelwa High School.
The summit offered valuable insights through presentations on environmental education, waste management, coastal and biodiversity conservation, climate change, and the management of invasive alien species.
A gala dinner and awards ceremony followed, celebrating schools demonstrating excellence in environmental initiatives. Nkwambazi Primary School proudly emerged as one of the award recipients, receiving a grass cutter, gardening accessories, hosepipe, garden tools, USB drive, and power bank in recognition of its achievements as a Green School.
This accolade highlights the school’s Nkwambazi Garden Club, a community-driven initiative focused on combating poverty through sustainable gardening. The school has also benefited from a five-year sponsorship from AFGRI under its School Vegetable Programme and has been re-sponsored for a second phase by Food & Trees for Africa in partnership with Fortress.
Xulu expressed his heartfelt appreciation to Zululand District official Phakamani Gwala for his continuous guidance and support, as well as to Mpati Lesiba Mojapelo (AFGRI CSI manager) and Nkululeko Didi (Food & Trees for Africa) for their contributions. He also extended gratitude to the SGB, educators and learners for their dedication and teamwork in maintaining the school’s Green School status.
