AbaQulusi battles rising transformer and cable theft
AbaQulusi faces rising transformer and cable theft, threatening service delivery and community safety.
Municipal infrastructure theft continues to rise across the AbaQulusi area, with the latest incidents reported on farms surrounding Vryheid.
A 50KVA transformer was recently stolen near Kruger Farm in the rural East Line of Schaapkopje Farms, while a 25KVA transformer was tampered with and destroyed at Zaailaagte Farm, near Vryheid Landbou School.
Mayor Condemns Ongoing Infrastructure Attacks
AbaQulusi Mayor, Sifiso Mkhwanazi, visited the affected areas last week and condemned the ongoing attacks on essential infrastructure. He urged residents to report any suspicious activity immediately, warning that repeated damage is placing pressure on service delivery.
Rising Incidents Across the CBD
Mkhwanazi said the municipality has recorded several similar incidents, including in the CBD, where infrastructure is frequently targeted and vandalised.
Stolen Equipment Likely Sold for Profit
“We are faced with a serious challenge as these individuals seem determined to destroy everything. They initially began by stealing protective equipment from our various substations. With access to electricity being a basic need, this sets back both businesses and residents.”
Mkhwanazi added that these frequent thefts suggest the stolen infrastructure is being sold for profit.
Appeal for Community Assistance
He appealed to scrapyards and residents to act as the municipality’s ‘eyes and ears’ and called for patience from affected households as municipal electricians work to restore services.
Copper Cables and Fuses Also Stolen
In addition to the transformer thefts, two copper cables were stolen in town, along with several fuses from streets across Vryheid.
