AbaQulusi hosts prayer for accident-free festive season

AbaQulusi leaders held a prayer event promoting road safety, awareness and community protection.

AbaQulusi Local Municipality, together with the AbaQulusi Christian Churches Fellowship (ACCF), hosted an Accident-Free Festive Season prayer event.

Roadside Prayers to Launch the Campaign

The programme began with a roadside prayer next to the Lakeside intersection, continuing at the junction near Engen Garage, and concluded with a prayer session at the Cecil Emmett Hall.

Faith Leaders Address Social Ills and Safety Concerns

Pastors and Apostles from the ACCF led various prayer items, focusing not only on road safety for the festive season but also on challenges such as gender-based violence, crime, substance abuse and other social ills affecting communities daily.

Mayor Highlights HIV/AIDS and Disability Awareness

AbaQulusi Mayor Sifiso Mkwanazi stressed the importance of raising awareness and actively participating in World AIDS Day. He noted that HIV/AIDS remains a serious concern in South Africa; a pandemic that has claimed many lives over the years. The mayor further highlighted the need for increased awareness around disabilities.
“We have an issue in our communities where we do not know how to treat people living with disabilities,” he said. “Some are born with them, others become disabled along the way, and we must stop discrimination and stereotypes. Parents must learn to accept, care for and love their children unconditionally if they have disabilities.”

Motivational Message from Scripture

Apostle Mbuyazi shared a Bible verse from Jeremiah 1:5-10, encouraging attendees to be mindful of the power of their words. “Everything you see in the world was spoken. Change the way you speak to yourself. Life and death lie in your tongue,” he said.

Authorities Intensify Festive Road Safety Measures

As part of the ongoing road safety campaign, AbaQulusi Traffic Law Enforcement, led by Sifiso Mkhwanazi and joined by Zululand District Municipality Mayor Michael Khumalo and other municipal officials, intensified roadblocks in an effort to curb holiday season accidents. The AbaQulusi Traffic Department has also issued a warning to motorists to obey traffic rules throughout the festive period.

Commitment to Regular Roadblocks and Safer Travel

The multi-stakeholder partnership has committed to conducting regular roadblocks weekly, monthly and quarterly. The initiative aims to enhance road safety for residents and visitors travelling in and out of Vryheid. Authorities urge all motorists to remain vigilant, respect the rules of the road and prioritise safety not only during the festive season but all year round.
