Mining company suspends Uitkomst Colliery operations

MC Mining Limited has announced the temporary suspension of operations at Uitkomst Colliery in Utrecht.

MC Mining Limited issued a statement on Monday (February 2) that all operations at the Uitkomst Colliery will be temporarily suspended from March 2.

Uitkomst Colliery is an operational mine in Utrecht. The mine produces high-grade metallurgical- and thermal coal used for steel production and generating electricity.

The mine is a key part of MC Mining’s ambition to support South-Africa’s steel ‘Master Plan’ and to reduce the country’s reliance on imported coal.

Despite the high-grade coal it produces, MC Mining made this decision after ‘a detailed view of Uitkomst Colliery’s operational and financial performance and an assessment of available alternatives’.

Employees will be retrenched, but MC Mining emphasised that the ‘hibernation’ of Uitkomst Colliery does not mean it will close down completely.
