Vryheid learners showcase poetry talent on Ukhozi FM

Harpo Primary School learners impress listeners with live poetry on Ukhozi FM.

Two learners from Harpo Primary School, Amkela Manqele and Enzokuhle Nkosi, enjoyed an unforgettable experience when they were invited to recite their poems live on Ukhozi FM.

Talent recognised during World Read Aloud Day

The invitation was extended by Durban-based poet Siyabonga Mpungose, who met the learners during the school’s World Read Aloud Day celebration. The event aims to promote a love of reading and storytelling among learners. Impressed by their talent and confidence, Mpungose offered them the opportunity to showcase their poetry on national radio.

Excitement builds on journey to Durban

The learners were overjoyed at the chance to travel to Durban and share their talent with a wider audience. Their excitement was evident as they reflected on the journey, recalling how Mr Mhlungu assisted them in rehearsing their poems on the way to the station.

Memorable moments at SABC studios

Upon arriving at the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) studios, they were thrilled to meet well-known personalities, including award-winning musician Sjava and social media personality Skhinkili.

Although initially intimidated by the microphone inside the studio, the learners quickly gained confidence and delivered outstanding performances. Their appearance on air marked a proud moment not only for them but for the entire school and Vryheid community.

Community support makes dream possible

The learners expressed heartfelt gratitude to Sifiso Mkhwanazi, Mayor of the AbaQulusi Local Municipality, for playing a significant role in making the trip possible. They also thanked Mrs Masombuka for facilitating what they described as a life-changing opportunity.

Manqele shared that, “This experience has inspired me to pursue a career in radio, but I will continue writing and reciting poems as a hobby.”

Inspired to dream bigger

The experience has not only boosted their confidence but has also encouraged them to dream bigger and continue nurturing their passion for poetry.
