Motorists fear bridge collapse on Falkirk Road
Motorists raise alarm over two crumbling bridges after years of inaction.
Businessman raises alarm over deteriorating structure
“We are tired of this nonsense now. Honestly, how much longer must we live like this before someone makes a plan?”
This was the reaction of a local businessman with premises in Falkirk Road, where a bridge is reportedly crumbling and raising serious safety concerns among motorists.
The businessman, who asked to remain anonymous for fear of victimisation, said drivers are risking their lives daily simply to reach their workplaces.
“What if that bridge collapses while a vehicle is crossing? Who will be responsible for the injuries, the damage or even a death?” he asked.
He claims the bridge began deteriorating more than two years ago. Despite repeated reports to the municipality, no action has been taken to address the issue. As a result, motorists and nearby businesses remain on edge, hoping the structure does not give way.
The businessman also expressed frustration about the lack of visible infrastructure maintenance.
According to him, ratepayers continue to pay high rates and taxes, yet little appears to be reinvested in essential local services.
Second bridge in Industrial Road also deteriorating

Further along Industrial Road, another bridge is reportedly in a similarly dangerous condition.
The structure, used daily by cars, trucks and buses, has also been deteriorating for more than two years. At present, only danger tape has been placed around sections of the bridge as a warning to road users.
Residents and business owners say the temporary measure does little to address the underlying safety risk and have again questioned the municipality’s priorities.
The Newcastle Advertiser sent an official media enquiry to Newcastle Municipality on February 13 regarding the condition of both bridges.
At the time of publication, no response had been received.
