Mayor warns lawbreakers ahead of Easter weekend
The mayor cautioned motorists to drive safely to prevent tragedies on the road.
Alfred Duma Local Municipality Mayor Zama Sibisi has issued a strong warning to lawbreakers ahead of the busy Easter weekend, stressing that municipal law enforcement will be out in full force to ensure public safety.
Speaking during a media briefing yesterday (April 1), Sibisi said that municipal police will be deployed across the area to enforce road safety regulations and maintain order.
Strong warning to motorists and criminals
Sibisi made it clear that authorities will take a zero-tolerance approach to reckless and criminal behaviour.
“I would like to issue a stern warning to those who plan to break the law, that Alfred Duma is a no-go area for such behaviour. If you come here driving under the influence, you will not go back home – you will spend the night in police custody. If you come here intending to commit crime, you will not succeed, as we are working closely with the SAPS,” said the mayor.
He emphasised that the municipality is prioritising the safety of both residents and visitors over Easter.
Caution urged amid road construction
The mayor also urged motorists to exercise extra caution on the roads, particularly in Ladysmith, where ongoing construction is affecting traffic flow.
He pointed out that routes such as the N11 are currently under construction, resulting in disruptions and slower movement of vehicles. Motorists were advised to remain patient, especially in areas where traffic lights are not functioning due to the ongoing work.
Sibisi reminded the public that the Easter holidays should not be marked by tragedy.
“Accidents are not caused by roads, but by human behaviour. We appeal to all road users to obey traffic rules, adhere to speed limits, and drive responsibly,” he said.
