Young graduate’s plea transforms family’s life in Vryheid

Graduate’s plea for help leads to new home and renewed hope for family.

In May last year, a young woman, Xolile Khoza (Mbatha), in her early twenties, took to social media seeking assistance for her family’s difficult living conditions in the Bhekuzulu, Ghetto area.

In a Facebook post, Xolile shared her desperate need for employment, explaining that her mother, who is wheelchair-bound, has been ill for nearly nine years and requires constant care. Her father, who used to be a street vendor, was forced to stop working to look after her. Despite these challenges, Xolile persevered and graduated from the University of KwaZulu-Natal with a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science and IT.

Harsh living conditions and daily struggles
She further revealed that their living conditions were dire, as they did not have a proper house structure. During the rainy season, water would flood their home, damaging their belongings and making life extremely difficult. Additionally, their electricity had been cut off due to an outstanding payment required for reconnection.

Community and stakeholders step in
Her heartfelt post touched many people, including Sipho Mbatha, popularly known as DJ Sgqemeza from Ukhozi FM. The Zululand District Municipality, AbaQulusi Local Municipality, and various organisations also came together to support Xolile and her family during their time of need.

New home brings hope and dignity
On Thursday, their lives changed for the better when a fully furnished, newly built home was officially handed over to the Mbatha family. The handover was attended by all stakeholders involved, along with community members who showed their support for the initiative.

Family expresses gratitude and relief
Xolile’s parents expressed deep gratitude, with her father sharing, “Our living conditions had been extremely difficult, and although some people mocked us, we endured because it was our home.” He thanked everyone who contributed, adding, “I am still in disbelief that such kindness exists. From today, I will finally be able to sleep peacefully in a proper home.” He described the day as unforgettable and one that would go down in history for his family.

Xolile’s mother, Nozipho Gumede, also thanked her daughter for her courage in asking for help, as well as all stakeholders and community members who made the new home possible.

A brighter future ahead
Xolile has since secured a permanent job and is hopeful about building a brighter future for herself and her family.
