100 desks handed over to deserving school

“Education is a priority focus area, among others, and as part of Youth Month, this project aims to contribute to providing hope to our young learners.''

Erasmus Fontein Combined School, based at Nhlazatshe, was one of five schools in the country to be earmarked by Transnet to receive 100 desks.

The school was identified as a ‘deserving beneficiary’ in line with Transnet’s socio-economic development criteria through their employee volunteerism programme. The initiative also formed part of the company’s Youth Month programmes that were planned across the country.
Speaking at the handover of the desks, Transnet Pipelines chief executive Michelle Phillips said, “Education is a priority focus area, among others, and as part of Youth Month, this project aims to contribute to providing hope to our young learners. Covid-19 deprived learners of socialising with each other and thus we are supporting you today with these desks.”

She continued that, “One day, I want to see some of you coming to join us and becoming employees of our wonderful organisation. So, from today, we become partners and these desks are now your assets, so we ask that you take good care of them. As I end off, I wish to encourage that, in return, you also play your part. As a school, as teachers, as learners, as parents and as a community, we urge you to be our eyes on the ground and help us prevent vandalism to our infrastructure and assets.”
The traditional council and SGB were also present to accept the desks, together with the principal. Representing Inkosi Zulu was Induna Sibiya, who extended the community’s appreciation for the gesture. He assured Transnet Pipelines that they will continue to support and also report any tampering within their communities.
