Self-published author releases new book

“I self-published the book with money I made selling chips and bunny chows during Covid-19,” she elaborates.

It is Bongi Madlala’s desire to dominate the world of reading, writing and publishing.
Bongi has written three books and the latest one is called ‘Banqoba Banqotshelwa Wuthando’. She explains that the book was inspired by a dream she had. “I self-published the book with money I made selling chips and bunny chows during Covid-19,” she elaborates.
This is the first book she has written in IsiZulu. It’s about unity, love, wisdom and trusting people.
Not content to sit on her laurels, Bongi is currently drafting a children’s book.
Bongi is based in the Mondlo area, where she lives with her partner and three children. She describes herself as a God-fearing woman who was once a model for various magazines when she stayed in Soweto, Gauteng.

‘’When I was younger, I had a passion for reading because my mother used to buy books and diaries. From reading, I developed a passion for writing. I would write about how I am feeling, write about God and general things we face in this world. I remember when I was 16 years old, my mother would read for me, as she was still studying at a college at that time. I would also take her books and just read. My mother is the one who instilled in me this love for reading and writing.’’
Bongi further explained that she studied Media so that she can continue and develop doing what she loves the most. However, when her mother passed away, her dad took her out of college because the fees were too expensive. She went to another college, where she started a B.Com (Bachelor of Commerce) . ‘’To be honest, I did not like what I was studying because I knew I was an artistic person, but my dad did not understand that. At some point, my dad realised how much I loved writing; he would see me writing day-in, day-out and one day he asked me what I was doing. I told him I am writing a book. He saw I was writing it with only with a pen and that’s when he bought me a laptop. That made me so happy!”

To other inspiring writers out there, she says: “Don’t give up and never give in. Hold on and believe in your dream. Your notes might not make sense now, but once they are put together, one day they will heal the nation… Even slaves feast on their master’s breadcrumbs.”
