Highlanders suffer worste home defeat against Sasol

Boschpick Highlanders lost 71-26 to Sasol in a tough home match.

In their worst-ever performance at home, Boschpick Highlanders went down 71-26 to Sasol.

This after Sasol led 35-7 at half-time.

Highlanders struggle against clinical Sasol

It was catch-up rugby from early in the game as Sasol scored three tries within the first five minutes.

“It was clear from kick-off that Highlanders were going to be in for a long day,” remarked head coach André Swanepoel.

“Although Sasol was clinical in everything they did, and outplayed Highlanders, our line-outs were good.

However, the back-line handling was very poor – knock-on after knock-on.

“Just as it looked as if Highlanders were finding their rhythm, someone would knock the ball on,” he added.

Giraffe (8) and Max (7) really played their hearts out, but unfortunately they fought a losing battle.

For Sasol, Anwar (12) and Theuns’s (13) experience proved too much for Highlanders, as the two maintained control of the game.

Points were awarded as follows:

  • Tries: Gift (12) – 1;
  • Henk (4) – 1;
  • Nipho (14) – 1;
  • Moyane (11) – 1;
  • Dube (21) – kicked thre conversions.

Second and third teams deliver victories

Highlanders‘ second team, on the other hand, showed that it is going to be difficult to beat them at home, winning 39-17 against Sasol’s second team.

In the first round, Highlanders lost 0-70 in Secunda. However, their second team is in good position to be in the semi-finals.

On Saturday, Highlanders’ third team won 41-19 against the Flying Eagles first team and it looks like Highlanders will advance to the finals of the NRSU third division.
