Thieves target fire hydrant
So-called paras are continuing to target municipal infrastructure

Water is pouring out of a fire hydrant on End Street after thieves tampered with a fitting.
It is believed that the ‘paras’ struck at around midnight and that water has been pouring out of the hydrant ever since.
Residents said that they have reported the matter to the Umzinyathi Municipality. So-called ‘paras’ (street people who target municipal infrastructure such as copper pipes which they sell for drugs) have stepped up their campaign to strip the town of such assets in recent months.
An outbuilding on Oldacre Street was also stripped of piping yesterday. The copper is usually sold to rogue dealers.
