Potholes turn into craters as Endumeni businesses register their unhappiness

While some holes have been filled by the municipality on McKenzie and Union Streets (many potholes have been repaired in Glencoe too), Grey Street, Gladstone, Colley and Browning and Hajee Jamal Streets have all ‘developed crater-like hazards in recent months’.

“The Endumeni Municipality must prioritise repairing hazardous road conditions to ensure the safety and well-being of its residents and businesses.”

The call was made by Cllr Naresh Gopie, chairperson of the Municipal Public Accounts Committee, following a flood of complaints from residents and business owners over the deteriorating condition of roads in Endumeni.

“Immediate action is needed to address the growing problem of potholes turning into craters, and the community expects transparency, accountability, and effective solutions from the local authorities.”

Asked specifically about an almost two-metre crater on Gladstone Street outside Nobungani Hardware, Cllr Gopie said that ‘Nobungani Hardware was warned by the Endumeni Technical Department that repairing government infrastructure is an offence, and that the Municipality is responsible for the repairs.’

As a community member and a public representative, it is alarming to witness a local business like Nobungani Hardware being jeopardized by deteriorating road conditions. Despite the continued payment of rates and taxes by residents and businesses, there is no guarantee that their concerns and issues will be adequately addressed.

“Promises of pothole repairs have been made to the community numerous times, yet these commitments have not been fulfilled. This lack of action is frustrating and concerning, as it highlights a critical failure in basic service delivery to the residents and businesses of Endumeni.

“We call upon Endumeni Municipality to fulfil its duty to the community, provide timely and lasting solutions to the road infrastructure issues, and ensure that businesses like Nobungani Hardware can operate without the fear of road-related disruptions.”
