Dundee farming sector salutes legendary Herman de Wet on his retirement

Herman was leading light in the local agricultural sector and was outspoken on many issues, with many seeking his advice. He also paid tribute to the farming community for their support, noting the many challenges he and his family faced.

Herman de Wet, a former chairperson of the Dundee Farmers Association and a long-time member, held a private auction at the Farmers Association pound on Wednesday morning, May 8, where approximately 600 different breeds of cattle were sold by auctioneers BKB.

Herman, who is known for his stentorian voice, addressed those at the auction, before the sale, where he said he was blessed to have started and ended two careers in his own time and is now heading for a third.
He spent 23 years in the South African National Defence Force, rising to the rank of colonel.

He then swapped his beret for a farmer’s hat; and he, Betty, and his family ran their farm at Rorke’s Drift for 27 years.

Herman thanked AAM marketers and BBK for their excellent services throughout his farming career. “Now I want to enjoy my pension with the family and spend more time with the grandchildren. I will start a third career, but we are still considering the options!

“We plan to move to Vryheid in June, but we will keep in contact with all our dear friends here.”
Herman was pleased that all the cattle at the sale were sold, with the average price fetched for the pregnant cows (both at the sale and those sold with the farm) being R16,100.
Many farmers from surrounding areas and community members wish Herman and family all the best in their new adventure.
