Thieves target hangars at Dundee airfield
There have been ongoing concerns over the lack of security at the airfield with livestock owners driving their animals onto the property but the latest incident of thefts have flight enthusiasts worried.
Several hangars at the Dundee airfield were broken into last Monday, with thieves stealing electrical cabling and other items. The tenants of the hangars believe the thieves were disturbed after cutting locks to gain entry. Among the stolen items was copper cabling, and a vacuum cleaner stored in one hangar was found abandoned nearby.
Tenants expressed concern over the lack of after-hours security at the airfield. In response, a private security company was called in to guard the hangars overnight, fearing the thieves might return.

The locks were broken off the hangar doors. The Dundee airfield has faced ongoing scrutiny, especially after the medical air rescue service vowed to avoid using the facility due to the dangerous runway conditions, caused by uncontrolled livestock and people wandering around the area. This service is vital for flying specialists into Dundee Hospital. The airfield’s security fence has been damaged in several places, giving easy access to trespassers.
During the recent ‘Mayoral Ride-Along’ organised by the Endumeni Residents’ Association, Mayor Mkhize observed the security issues firsthand. He noted the problem of stock farmers allowing their animals to graze on the airfield and asked them to keep off the runway. However, with limited security, there are doubts about the airfield’s future security.
