Umzinyathi residents urged to work closely with police to combat rape, murder and stock theft

The SAPS and community engagement sessions are a productive platform for community members to voice their concerns, ask pertinent questions and receive timely responses.

A successful community engagement at Alva Primary School in the Helpmekaar area saw members of the public meet with police officials to tackle serious crime.

Organised by Msinga Municipality, in partnership with Helpmekaar SAPS, the event aimed to address rape, murder and stock theft.
Councillor Mkhize called on community members to collaborate closely with law enforcement to combat these crimes.
The station commander, Captain Dlamini, reiterated that the SAPS’s core function is to ensure public safety and encourage a strong, ongoing partnership between the community and the police to enhance crime prevention efforts.

Lieutenant Colonel Mbatha from the Glencoe Stock Theft Unit shared valuable insights on the importance of branding, urging community members to ensure that their stock is easily identifiable to prevent theft. Constable Mazibuko from the Dundee Family Violence, Child Protection & Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) spoke about the role of the FCS, highlighting the support services available to victims of crime.
Warrant Officer Myeni (detective commander) emphasised the importance of knowing the investigating officer when opening cases. He also emphasised the necessity of accountability and clear communication between the police and victims to ensure effective case management.

Mr Sithole from the Department of Community Safety & Liaison (DCSL) stressed the crucial role of traditional leaders (Izinduna). He urged them not to resolve contact crime cases within traditional courts, but to allow the police to conduct proper investigations and bring criminals to justice.

“The session concluded on a positive note, with all issues addressed accordingly,” said police spokesperson Constable Siyabonga Nkwanyana.
Representatives from various stakeholders were in attendance.
These included Nhlanhleni SAPS, Helpmekaar SAPS, Msinga Municipality, the Community Policing Forum, the Youth Desk, DCSL, Msinga Local Traffic, Glencoe Stock Theft Unit, SAPS District Communications, the ward councillor, Dundee FCS, Department of Social Development, and Department of Agriculture.
