Members of the Pietermaritzburg Public Order Policing (POP) Unit led the intelligence-driven operation in the Mbabane area, following up on information on a stash of illegal firearms.

“Upon arrival at the location, police came under fire, which they returned, ” said Constable Siyabonga Nkwanana, Umzinyathi SAPS spokesperson
Three men were shot dead. Two AK47 rifles, a .38 revolver, and ammunition were recovered on the scene.

In a separate operation on February 27, the Glencoe K9 units arrested five suspects on the R33 following another intelligence-driven operation. The men were found in possession of one Ruger rifle and ammunition inside the motor vehicle they were traveling in.
