King oversees R350-million road upgrade project at Isandlwana

Isandlwana is the primary attraction on the KZN Battlefields Route.

The rural Isandlwana area has been given a huge economic boost with Friday’s launch of the P372 access road upgrade project by King Misuzulu ka Zwelithini.
The R350-million programme will turn the 31km gravel road into an all-weather tar road. The road leads to the world-famous 1879 Anglo-Zulu War battlefield – the site of Britain’s heaviest defeat.

Reginald Demana, CEO of the South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL), said the project is a joint one involving the agency, the KZN Transport Department and National Transport Department.
“This project forms part of the Stimulus Package (SIP26) gazetted by President Cyril Ramaphosa, entrusting SANRAL with the project’s implementation. It will create about 130 temporary jobs and will result in R106 million being pumped into the local economy, where opportunities are scarce.

“Once completed, the upgraded road will stimulate tourism, improve mobility, enhance road safety – especially in adverse weather conditions – and strengthen economic ties between Isandlwana, the Nquthu Central Business District and surrounding communities.”
24 small and medium enterprises will also benefit.

Ndabezinhle Sibiya of the KZN Transport Department said the road will vastly increase mobility in the area, where adverse weather often renders the gravel roads impassable.

It was also announced that a new expo centre will be built at the Isandlwana Museum, where locals will be able to showcase and sell their arts & crafts.
King Misuzulu ka Zwelithini, who officiated at the sod-turning ceremony, said the road will boost tourism, which will help the local economy.
He also hinted at plans for opening hotels and filling stations in the area.
The project will officially start in May and the second phase, which will improve a 64km section of road, has also being earmarked.
