Umzinyathi employees face pay day delay

The Umzinyathi District Municipality has been under fire from opposition parties and civic associations for what they allege is poor management and poor budgeting.

The Umzinyathi District Municipality may have a new Mayor but the problems at the institute appear to keep piling up.

Employees were told yesterday, March 24, that there could be a ‘possible delay for the payment of salaries for the month of
March 2025.’

In an internal memo, seen by the Courier, Municipal Manager, NT Mkhwanazi said the delay is being caused ‘by the release of third rench of the Equitable Share from National Treasury.’

“The Equitable Share will be released during the course of the week dated  March 24-28, 2025 with no specific date stipulated. After the receipt of the equitable share, salaries will be released accordingly.
We apologize for any inconvenience caused by this delay and assure everyone that as soon as funds
are received, the salaries will be released.”

Critics from opposition parties said the delay in salary payments ‘is indicative of poor management in the District Municipality’.

The Municipality has had a string of poor audit results and is grappling with chronic water delivery issues caused by poor infrastructure and a lack of maintenance highlighted by a recent public march on the Princess Magogo building.
