Fresh calls for safety upgrade at Glencoe bypass after crash

A crash at the Glencoe bypass has renewed calls for urgent safety measures to prevent further tragedies.

Calls have again been made for the authorities to make the notorious intersection on the Glencoe/Dundee road with the R602 (known locally as the Glencoe bypass) safer.
This follows Saturday’s near-fatal crash involving a double-cab bakkie and a VW Polo.
A grandmother, her daughter, and teenage grandson had to be pulled out of the double-cab that landed on its side after colliding with the Polo.

First at the scene was Dillin Clarke, who has first aid training.
He said he was on his way to Glencoe at about 13:30 when he came upon the wrecked vehicles.
The bakkie was on its side and the Polo in a nearby field.
“I climbed on top of the bakkie to assist the three occupants.
“Five other guys stopped to help too, so it was good to see that people still care,” Clarke told the Courier.
One woman, who suffers from asthma, was given her pump before being carried from the vehicle.
The teenager sustained cuts.

Paramedics later treated the family.
The Polo’s occupants were not injured.
Residents and witnesses say that urgent steps are needed to prevent further tragedies. “The intersection must be made more noticeable, especially for motorists unfamiliar with the roads. One solution would be a traffic light, as is in place on the N11 entering Newcastle,” Clarke suggested.
