Dundee SASSA office improves services with modern systems and upgrades
Dundee SASSA office improves services with modern systems, online access, solar power and upgraded facilities for clients.
For many residents, visiting the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) office has often felt as unpleasant as a trip to the dentist – unavoidable, but frustrating.
However, the Dundee office in Avon Road has recently undergone significant improvements, offering a far more user-friendly experience.
A new queue-management system, similar to those used in banks, has been introduced to reduce delays and confusion. Office manager Simphiwe Xaba explained that the changes aim to ensure clients are assisted quickly and correctly, avoiding repeated visits caused by missing documents.
“Anyone entering is greeted and directed according to their needs. A ticket is issued, and clients wait in comfort until their number is called,” said Xaba.
To further streamline the process, first-time applicants are encouraged to use the SASSA website, where documents such as IDs, birth certificates and marriage certificates can be uploaded. For those without internet access, a PC with a scanner and printer is now available in the Dundee office.
Another long-standing challenge has been the lack of reliable electricity. SASSA spokesperson Sandy Godlwana confirmed that a new solar system has been installed, improving stability and minimising disruptions. She added that fluorescent lighting, still required in some areas, must be sourced through the Department of Public Works.
“This investment not only improves the working environment for staff but also ensures beneficiaries continue to access essential services without unnecessary delays or costs,” said Godlwana.
The once-problematic toilets have also been repaired and upgraded, with facilities for persons with disabilities now fully operational and maintained.
Godlwana acknowledged recurring infrastructure issues and confirmed that discussions are underway with the Department of Public Works to secure new office space within the Dundee CBD.
“We want to give clients convenient access to services in a modern facility with all necessary amenities,” she said.
Outside the building, Avon Road remains in a poor condition, making access difficult. SASSA has engaged Endumeni Local Municipality to address the problem.
“We have requested their assistance in maintaining the surrounding roads to ensure that service delivery remains uninterrupted,” Godlwana concluded.
