Durnacol youth launch clean-up drive to restore community pride
Durnacol youth launch a Heritage Day clean-up campaign to restore pride in their community and fight illegal dumping.
Motivated by the need to improve their environment, the young people of Durnacol launched a clean-up campaign on Heritage Day to restore pride in their community.
Frustrated by the state of local parks and public spaces, which have become illegal dumping sites, the volunteers rolled up their sleeves and tackled litter across several areas.
“It’s not only that the municipality is failing to keep our area clean, but also that residents are careless and negligent,” said organiser Amanda Xulu.
While the Heritage Day effort has already made a visible difference, organisers emphasised this was only the beginning.
“Our vision is not just to clean Durnacol, but to bring more campaigns and developmental programmes that will uplift our community and open opportunities for the youth,” Amanda added.
The campaign is being spearheaded by Amanda Xulu, Buhle Zikalala, Melusi Mnomiya and Sindi Qeqane. Residents are encouraged to join the initiative or assist with donations of rakes, gloves, masks and recycling bags.
