Repairs finally bring hope to Dundee’s water supply challenge

Dundee residents may finally see water flow again on Wednesday as repair teams battle to fix multiple pipeline breaks.

Dundee’s frustrated residents, left without water since early Saturday (and in some cases Friday evening), may finally find relief on Wednesday morning.

Umzinyathi District Municipality’s Technical Manager, Sizwe Ngubane, confirmed that teams have been working tirelessly for several days to repair damaged sections of the main pipeline.

“The challenge yesterday was that we could not source critical material locally, so we had to collect parts out of town, which took time. The terrain is also difficult, with overgrowth and marshy conditions,” he said.

Ngubane warned, however, that air trapped in the system could delay water flow even after repairs are completed.
“Residents should expect water to return by Wednesday morning. We apologise for the inconvenience and assure the community that our dedicated team is doing all they can under trying conditions,” he added.

The outage began early on Saturday after a major pipeline rupture near Diaz Road. While temporary repairs restored limited supply by Sunday, another burst near Dundee High School again crippled the system.

Readers who posted on the Courier’s Facebook page complained that the disruption dampened Diwali celebrations and caused anxiety for households as matric and year-end exams approach.
