Amajuba District SAPS has welcomed the life sentences handed down to Thelumusa Masondo, Sphamandla Thusi and Khuleka Nkosi for the murder of 28-year-old Thabiso Radebe.

According to Amajuba District SAPS spokesperson Constable Nonjabulo Langa, in addition to three life sentences, the Madadeni Regional Court added eight years each for kidnapping Radebe prior to his murder.

Key witness targeted

Langa explained that Radebe was a key witness in the kidnapping and murder of Thokozani Madi, whose body was found in the Mzinyathi River.

“During Madi’s murder case, Radebe was reported missing and was eventually found a few days later, dead in a dam in Flathela, Osizweni,” said Langa.

A witness, who will remain anonymous, was able to identify and help link the three accused to the kidnapping and murder of Radebe.

Threats were received during the trial, which prompted the investigating officer to immediately place the witness in a witness protection programme.

Investigation leads to convictions

The Madadeni Regional Court finally found the three accused to be guilty of murder and kidnapping on July 24, where they each received life imprisonment for murder and eight years for kidnapping.

Amajuba District Commissioner, Major General FB Alexander, welcomed the sentencing and commended Detective Sergeant SM Nene for his dedication and professional investigation, which ensured that justice was served.

“This reiterates that the South African Police Service remains committed to investigating serious and violent crimes thoroughly, and ensuring that the perpetrators are brought to justice for their actions,” he concluded.
