Dannhauser’s Mrizo Mashaba earns national spotlight with SAGRA nomination

From humble beginnings, Mrizo Mashaba has earned a national SAGRA nomination, marking another milestone in his inspiring musical journey.

Dannhauser-born music sensation Mrizo Mashaba is striking all the right chords as he eyes national recognition at the upcoming South African Gospel Recognition Awards (SAGRA), where he has been nominated for Best Gqom/Amapiano Project.

A journey rooted in passion and perseverance

Born on February 20, 1992, Mashaba discovered his love for music at the age of seven under the guidance of his father, who not only nurtured his musical talent but also taught him valuable life skills such as bricklaying.

Now a familiar voice in the local music scene, Mashaba hosts Eyakithi Lengoma — a popular maskandi show on Newcastle Community Radio Station that airs every Saturday from 12:00 to 15:00. The show showcases both traditional and modern African sounds, reflecting Mashaba’s deep passion for preserving cultural music heritage.

With over a decade in the industry, he has crafted a unique fusion of maskandi, Afro-pop and gospel, appealing to fans across generations. His powerful stage presence and authenticity have made him a favourite at corporate functions and major music festivals alike.

From small-town roots to national recognition

Mashaba’s breakthrough came after being discovered by acclaimed producer Steve Raphadu, leading to victory at the Gumba Fest competition and collaborations with leading artists such as DJ Tira, Prince Bulo, Spirit Banger, DJ Kilimanjaro and Duncan. Their hit single Ikhaya Lengoma cemented his place in the industry.

In 2016, he appeared on SABC 1’s Mikasi Sukasi, followed by a collaboration with Mono T on the Move On EP in 2017. His 2019 album, also produced by Raphadu, featured well-known performer Zulu Mkhathini.

Mashaba draws inspiration from music legends including Ihhashi Elimhlophe, Chico Twala, Jabu Khanyile, Bhekumuzi Luthuli and Umanji, blending their influences into his ever-evolving sound. He now works closely with gospel legend Richard Masemola, who serves as both his producer and manager.

As the SAGRA Awards ceremony approaches — set to take place in East London on November 15 — Mashaba remains humble but hopeful.

“This nomination is a blessing and a reflection of how far we’ve come,” he said. “I’m honoured to represent Dannhauser and the Amajuba District on a national stage.”

Supporters can help him bring the award home by sending an SMS with SAGRA 20 to 34232.
