Convicted rapists condemned to various terms of life imprisonment
The Madadeni Regional Court in Newcastle has handed down four life imprisonment sentences to two convicted rapists.
The first conviction was handed to 45-year-old Muziwami Zwane on Thursday, May 4, after he was convicted for raping three women in separate incidents in 2019.
Lizzy Arumugam, Newcastle SAPS corporate communications officer, confirmed that Zwane will also serve nine additional years for kidnapping and an additional six years for assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
The incidents
The first incident took place on November 2, 2019, when Zwane lured a victim, who was 40-years-old at the time, from a tavern to his house in Madadeni (section 2).
“He locked the door and dragged her to his bedroom, where he repeatedly rape. He imprisoned the victim until she managed to escape on the third day,” she explained.
However, just a day after his victim freed herself, Zwane convinced his ex-girlfriend to visit him so that the two could drink traditional beer together.
Zwane kidnapped the then-27-year-old victim, kept her overnight and raped her repeatedly. He also strangled her and assaulted her with a bush knife.
“Prior to his November raping spree, Zwane had used the same modus operandi to kidnap, assault, and repeatedly rape the then 29-year-old victim from May 27 to 28, 2019.”
Another convicted rapist, Mandlenkosi Ace Jiyane, will be added to the National Register of Sex Offenders after he was sentenced to life imprisonment by the same court on May 5, following his conviction for the rape of a 12-year-old girl at Section 3 in Madadeni on October 19, 2020.
“The girl’s teacher had noticed that something was wrong with her, and with the involvement of her parents, the girl spoke of her rape ordeal at the hands of Jiyane (46) who was duly arrested.”
The Provincial Commissioner of KwaZulu-Natal, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, has hailed the Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offenses (FCS) investigating officers for their meticulous investigations.
“Rapists have no space in our society, and we shall pull out all the stops to ensure that we prevent rapes from happening. However, as challenging as it is to police rape, in the unfortunate event that it occurs, our dedicated investigators will dig deep to ensure that victims of rape get justice and that perpetrators are removed from society for the longest time,” said Lieutenant General Mkhwanazi.
