Newcastle K9 officer wounded during shootout in Signal Hill

A Newcastle K9 Unit officer was wounded during a shootout at a home in Signal Hill in the early hours of Monday morning (July 3).

According to police sources, police were called out to a complaint of domestic disturbance at a house in Signal Hill at around 00:10.

A young man was allegedly holding his parents hostage in the house. Police then broke down a door to gain entry to the property and noticed the suspect was sitting in the lounge.

As police were making their way towards him, he proceeded to pull a weapon and start shooting at the officers, wounding an officer after a bullet ricocheted against the wall, puncturing him in his right thigh.

The gunman attempted to flee through the lounge door, but was caught and apprehended outside, and taken into police custody.

Officers recovered two weapons in the house, one belonging to the suspect and the other to his father.

The wounded officer was taken to the hospital to receive medical attention.

The suspect is set to appear before the Newcastle Magistrate’s Court this week.

The exact cause of the incident is currently unclear and will remain subject to further police investigations.
