Local security firms warn residents to be vigilant as dog poisoning is on the rise

Local pet owners are being urged to stay extra vigilant as cases of dog poisoning have risen over the past month.

Ashley Mahadeo, Fidelity ADT Branch Manager, warned they are aware of ‘specifically noted incidents in the Schuinshoogte area, with three houses targeted on Begonia Street.’

He added that residents needed to be extra vigilant and report any suspicious individuals or vehicles seen in their area to their local security firms or to the SAPS.

Usually we see a spate of house robberies following incidents of dog poisoning, so we all need to work together to ensure these properties are secure,” said Mahadeo.

He confirmed that Fidelity ADT, in particular, would be upping its presence in ‘target’ areas to ensure greater visibility and support for residents.

According to Mahadeo, guard dogs were a great early warning system, and are targeted when criminals want to gain access to a property.

Aldicarb, also known as two-step or Temik, according to him, was the most commonly used poison. It looks like little black poppy seeds, is granular in appearance, and is highly toxic. Criminals usually hide it in meat so that dogs can consume it.
