Hawks make arrests for illegal guns in Estcourt

The estimated street value of the recovered firearms is about R20,000

Hawks members from the Pietermaritzburg Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit recently arrested two suspects (aged 24 and 39) in Alexander Street, Estcourt. They were found in possession of unlicensed firearms.

According to the Hawks, police raided the suspects’ location, where two pistols were found in a concealed packet in one of the rooms. The suspects failed to provide documentation or a valid reason for having the firearms. The serial numbers on both guns had been removed.

The suspects were immediately arrested and charged with possession of unlicensed firearms.

The pistols will be subjected to ballistic testing to determine whether they were used in the commission of any crime in the country.

The two suspects appeared in the Estcourt Magistrate’s Court last week.

KZN Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation provincial head, Major General (Dr) Lesetja Senona, praised the members for their good work.
