Brutal tavern killings shock Emabhalonini community
Estcourt police are investigating two counts of murder and investigations are currently underway.
The brutal killing of two men in the Emabhalonini area last month has left the local community reeling with shock and disbelief. The incident occurred on Sunday, June 30, and has sparked widespread concern over escalating violence in the area.
According to Estcourt police, violence reportedly broke out between two groups of men and quickly escalated into two separate altercations that turned deadly.
SAPS spokesperson Warrant Officer Basheer Khan confirmed the incident, saying that a bar brawl led to the deaths of two patrons. “A fight erupted in a tavern in the Emabhalonini area on Sunday, June 30. Sboniso Hadebe (27) was declared dead at the scene, while Mbulelo Nene (28) later succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital. Both had sustained multiple assault and stab wounds,” said Khan.
A visibly shaken community member expressed dismay over the incident. “We were shocked when we heard what happened. They were hacked right inside the tavern. People are talking about it, but it’s unbelievable that disagreements have come to this – killing each other so brutally.”

Mayor Mduduzi Myeza has strongly condemned the attack. “We are deeply saddened by this horrific act of violence. I urge all law enforcement agencies to act swiftly and decisively in their investigation. Justice must be served without delay, and those responsible must face the full might of the law,” he said in a statement.
As investigations continue, the community remains in mourning and calls for greater efforts to curb tavern-related violence and promote peace in the area.
