Man drowns in Klip River after fleeing from mob in Steadville

The man had allegedly been accused of rape by the community.

Ladysmith Visible Policing officers responded to a distress call in the Qwa Qwa area of Steadville on Thursday morning (November 13), where they were led to the body of an unidentified man who had allegedly drowned.

According to police spokesperson Warrant Officer Basheer Khan, community members had accused the man of rape and he was allegedly being chased by a mob when he jumped into the Klip River in an attempt to escape. He reportedly experienced difficulties in the water and drowned.

Khan added that detectives have opened an inquest docket and investigations are continuing.

The identity of the deceased has not yet been confirmed.
