Police make over 1000 arrests during festive season operations

All suspects have appeared in various magistrate's courts within the district.

Festive season operations by Uthukela District police saw a large number of suspects arrested across the district.

The Safer Festive Season Operations, launched on October 15 last year, saw police wasting no time in implementing planned strategies.

According to the SAPS, the operations targeted the abuse of alcohol and drugs, which are often contributing factors to contact crimes. Special attention was also given to firearms-related offences, as firearms have been identified as the preferred weapon in many murder cases.

Results of operations across the district

655 arrests for drunk driving;

731 arrests for trading in liquor without a licence, and public drunkenness;

318 arrests under the Drug Trafficking Act, including possession;

106 arrests for unlawful possession of firearms and/or ammunition;

187 undocumented persons were arrested.

Police also conducted extensive and focused patrols, including blue-light patrols and foot patrols, throughout the district. Authorities are confident that these operations will continue to yield positive results, as the Festive Season Operations run until mid-January.
