Shute shooter appears in court

The next court appearance will be January 22.

Martin Wessels, who is accused of fatally shooting Anton Lombard in April last year, appeared in court this morning (January 7). Wessels is being represented by attorney Justin Heunis.

The case has been postponed until January 22 for copies of the docket.

Wessels is currently out on bail.

The shooting took place at the Hauser Park Sports Bar, also known as The Shute, in the Egerton area. When police arrived after the incident, Wessels handed himself over and a firearm belonging to him was removed from a vehicle.

First court appearance

Wessels made his first court appearance in May last year after spending a few days in custody. During the bail hearing, video evidence was presented by Wessels’ defence. The crux of the evidence was that Lombard attacked Wessels in the parking lot.

Wessels said he believed Lombard was armed with a knife and intended to kill him. In the scuffle that ensued out in the parking area, Wessels claimed his gun accidentally discharged.
