Police officer, crime fighter arrested over alleged stolen firearm

A local police officer and community crime fighter have been arrested while investigators probe claims of a stolen firearm.

The Newcastle Advertiser has been made aware of the arrests of a local police officer and a community crime fighter earlier this afternoon (January 14).

At this stage, it remains unclear whether the two will face criminal charges, as they have not yet appeared in court.

It is believed the arrests relate to a case involving a stolen firearm, and that they may face charges of defeating the ends of justice.

The Advertiser has contacted the South African Police Service spokesperson, Lizzy Arumugam, for clarity on the matter and is awaiting an official response.

Further updates will be published as soon as more information becomes available.
